Today, Warriors head coach Cole was interviewed and talked about Kumingga, who had just reached a renewal.
Q: In the negotiations this summer, many voices said that he might go somewhere else. Even the structure of the contract makes it possible for him to be traded before January. As a coach, how do you deal with the problems that always exist behind this potential "uncertainty" in your daily coaching?
Cole: The first thing to do is to have a good conversation with JK. In my opinion, this is actually the core of any team's culture - communication. We have to sit down and have a good talk. I have always gotten along well with him, and there has never been any personal conflicts. The only question is fit - what the team needs, how he sees himself, and how we see him.
So I think we have to have a real conversation before the season begins. In fact, we will definitely talk in the next few days to make sure everyone is on the same channel.
Q: So what message do you want to convey in this face-to-face conversation?
Cole: Basically everything I just talked about - how you find a role that really suits you, what that means, what our team will look like, all of which we will talk about.
In addition, we will try some lineup combinations that didn't have much chance to use in the second half of last season in the first 10 to 15 games at the beginning of the season. Of course, now we still need to integrate Al (Horford) into the system. We have to see how he will affect the team. We have many different lineup combinations to try. As always, we will conduct experiments, combining naked-eye observation and data analysis. You may not know that we have about 10 people doing data analysis and providing me with all the information, including lineup combinations, double combinations, three-person combinations, etc. We collect all the data, watch all the videos, and then make decisions based on the choice that gives us the greatest chance of winning.
Q: You mentioned this issue yesterday and today, and several veterans also talked about it a few days ago - business and basketball are separate. If the follow-up is not progressing, why don’t you worry that this will become a lingering distraction?
Cole: We have a great team and strong leadership in the locker room. I've known JK for many years and he's not the kind of person who will ruin the team. Our team is very deep, many people can play, and many players are ready to take the lead at any time.
You see, Jimmy changed our team immediately last year. Jimmy is a leader, and Stephen and Zhu Meng are also leaders. They dominate the atmosphere in the locker room. I'm not worried about these issues at all.
