"AS" reported that Celta Vigo is about to renew the contract of veteran Marcos Alonso.

Alonso will turn 35 at the end of December. His current contract will expire on June 30, 2026, and he is likely to have completed a contract extension with Celta before his 35th birthday.

It is reported that the contract renewal negotiations between the two parties have started and everything is going smoothly. The club's football director Marco Garces revealed in an interview with "AS": "We are in negotiations and are very close to reaching an agreement. The contract extension may be completed soon."

Although Alonso was nearly 34 years old when he joined Celta and had been sidelined for four months due to a back injury, he has now become indispensable to the team. Alonso only joined the team at the start of the league last year, but he quickly made his debut and established himself as the absolute main force. He played 2,649 minutes in the league, second only to Mingueza (2,735 minutes) among non-goalkeeper players in Celta Vigo.

Alonso's adaptation to Celta Vigo's tactical system is the key to ushering in the second spring of his career. He is the undisputed leader of Celta's defense. Although he is not in the captain's group, he actually performs the duties of the captain. Barring an unexpected turn of events, he will sign a new contract with Celta Vigo in the coming weeks and continue to be a key part of the team's plans.
